It makes sense how to pack your linens (folded), how to bundle your dishes (carefully!), and how to keep your appliances from knocking together (lots of blankets). However, how can you easily pack slippery piles of clothing on hangers? Clothes can be one of the toughest things to move, as you don’t want to remove everything from hangers and fold them as that can really increase the time needed to make your move. Make your move easier and more efficient when you learn how best to handle your various items of clothing.

Purge First

Purging your closets is especially important when you are making a cross-country move, as each item adds to your expense. If you haven’t worn it or seen it in at least six months, it may be time to consider donating some of your older items that are still in great shape, and then simply toss items that are stained or completely out of style. Moving can also be a great time to review your wardrobe choices and see what no longer works with your personal style or comfort level. Getting rid of several bags of clothing can make a big difference when it’s time to get packing.

Start by Planning

Look at your home in totality before you start the task of packing things up. Are there items like t-shirts or sweats that you could use as a packaging material to keep delicate items such as china or silverware safe during a move? This might limit the amount of newspaper that you need, and save you room and weight overall in your move. Estimate how many boxes you will need and have them ready and waiting for when you get ready to start packing.

Moving Clothing on Hangers

Keeping your higher-end items on hangers is a great way to keep from having to wash or iron them again at your destination. Shirts, pants and dresses are a lot less likely to be wrinkled to pieces and dirty if you keep them on their hangers, and find a wardrobe box that you can use to pack and unpack conveniently. The last thing you want to do is show up at your new home and spend the first month ironing all of your clothing!

Don’t Pack them Dirty

Packing only clothes that have been cleaned gives you one less question when you arrive at your destination. If you know that everything was clean when you packed it, there will be no question about whether you immediately have to fire up the washer and dryer at your new place. Instead, you can simply put clothing away until you need to wear it – which will save you time, energy and ultimately your sanity.

Get Creative

Why send suitcases to your new home empty? Instead, use your suitcases and trunks as packing supplies, filling them up with socks, undies and other clothing that was in drawers and is very packable – especially things that will not wrinkle in shipping.

Keeping your items safe and sound during a move can be straightforward as long as you plan. Making sure your items get safely to their new location can use the help of a moving agency; and one of the best ways to find a mover is to use MoversUnion.com where you can get a comprehensive list of organizations to support
